Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these medications need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
